A senior Assam Police officer and three doctors of a government-run hospital have been arrested in Darrang district for allegedly covering up the rape and murder of a 13-year-old tribal girl, police said on Tuesday.
Darrang Additional Superintendent of Police Rupam Phukan was arrested for allegedly taking bribe from the accused, said a statement issued by the state CID.
Three doctors of Mangaldai Civil Hospital — Arun Chandra Deka, Ajanta Bordoloi and Anupam Sharma — who conducted the initial post-mortem examination of the victim’s body have been arrested for “multiple commissions and expulsions”, she said. .
This girl’s body was found in June in a house in Dhula Police Station where she was working as a domestic worker. The main accused, Krishna Kamal Baruah — the owner of the house, was arrested and is currently in judicial custody.
Phukan, an earlier suspended Assam Police officer, allegedly received Rs 1.5 lakh as a bribe from the accused’s relatives through the then officer-in-charge of the Dhula police station in Utpal Bora, it said. said CID.
He was trying to “investigate” the accused, he was told.
The houses of Phukan and SP Darrang Rajmohan Ray are also being searched, she added.
Ray was already suspended, while Dhula’s OC was then arrested.
The CID said that the three doctors wrote in their report that there was no injury other than the “ligature mark”, and they did not say anything about the bones of the head and neck that were clearly removed during the second post-mortem. ” of the body.
A second post-mortem, carried out after the body was exhumed on August 25, found the death to be “a non-suicidal strangulation”.
The CID said that no video footage was taken and proper procedure was not followed during the initial investigation of the death.
“The doctors clearly conspired to justify the lack of evidence with the aim of investigating the culprit and also to create a false record to save the accused,” she said.
The CID took over the investigation after the intervention of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who visited the girl’s house on August 12 and met her family.
The girl’s family claims that Dhula’s OC at that time pressured them not to file a case against her.
The CID submitted a detailed charge sheet in the case on September 25.
