GUWAHATI- Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday (November 9) announced projects worth Rs 50,000 crore for Assam. These projects are;

Guwahati Ring Road: The 91-km long ring road connecting Guwahati will cost Rs 4,500 crore.

It will be an integral part of the state capital region and will give Guwahati a modern look. Work on the ring road project is scheduled to begin in 2-3 months.

As part of the ring road project, the Brahmaputra bridge connecting Narengi and Kuruwa is also proposed to be constructed at a cost of 1,800 crore.

Kaziranga High Street: The 38-km long road is planned to be constructed with nine roads used by the animals of the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) mainly during the flood season.

Kaziranga National Park, located in Assam, is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site in India and is famous for the Great Indian one-horned rhinoceros.

The four-lane project will run on an existing arterial road and will be constructed at a cost of Rs 6,000 crore.

The highway along the southern edge of KNP has often turned deadly for livestock fleeing the farm while floods have saved the hills of Karbi Anglong district, further south. 6-Lane Khanapara-Jorabat Road: The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) will convert the existing 25-km four-lane stretch from Jalukbari to Jorabat via Khanapara to a six-lane road.

The ambitious project is aimed at reducing the increasing traffic and congestion on NH-37 from Jalukbari near Guwahati to Jorabat.

Five Roadmap Projects: National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) and the Government of Assam have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for five highway projects in the state at a cost of Rs 2,000 crore.

One of these, is a road project connecting Khanapara and Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI).

Jorhat-Majuli Bridge: A 6.8-km bridge on NH-715K is being constructed across the Brahmaputra river between Majuli (Kamalabari) and Jorhat (Nimati Ghat).

It is estimated to cost Rs 925.47 crore and the work was awarded to UP State Bridge Corporation Limited. This bridge will be built in March, 2025

The construction of the bridge has been a long-standing demand of the people of Majuli, who for centuries depended on ferry services to connect with mainland Assam.

This bridge will provide easy and constant access to the people of Majuli and the rest of Assam to meet their health, education and daily development activities.

The construction of the bridge will also provide safe evacuation to the people of Majuli Island during the flooding of the Brahmaputra River.

Union Minister Gadkari further said that the government will complete 2 million road projects by 2024.
