MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) — One person is dead and two others were injured after police say a shooting broke out at an East Mesa apartment complex.

Police said the shooting happened near Main Street and Power Road around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. Details about what led up to the shooting are very limited. However, police described the initial scene as “chaotic” as officers dealt with multiple injured people and several 911 calls to the apartment. Video from the scene showed extensive use of crime scene tape, blocking access to the complex and patrol vehicles securing traffic in the area.

A victim, described only as a man, was pronounced dead after being found in a stairwell. Officers later found two other injured people, one of whom was in another apartment. The extent of those injuries is still unclear.

At this time, detectives are still working to determine if the suspects and victims knew each other. However, no suspect has been identified, but authorities have confirmed that officers have taken multiple people into custody. The police say that they do not know whether the accused are still at large. The investigation is still ongoing. A heavy police presence is expected throughout the morning.
