SILCHAR: The forest department of south Assam district Hailakandi has formed a team and assigned it the responsibility of countering the monkeys who have been terrorizing various areas of Panchgram in Hailakandi district for the past few months.
According to the residents of Panchgram, which is about 24 km from Silchar town, a large army of monkeys have been causing problems in different areas of Panchgram for the past few months. Incidents of monkeys entering homes, attacking people, stealing food and destroying valuables have been reported in the past few months.
The areas of Panchgram that reported the most incidents include Radharani Colony, Panchgram Upper Colony and Kalibari with a population of around 3000-3500 people.
The animals, which have increased in number in the last few months, have also recently bitten a number of people, and the records were found at the primary health center in Kalinagar where the people who were injured due to monkey bites were treated, according to local residents.
On Thursday, forest officials including Panchgram forest officer D. Tamuli, Darkona forest beating officer Sabinoy Deben and several others visited Panchgram and burnt the guns at different places.
Sabinoy Deben who spoke to the newsmen said that a group of four forest officials were assigned to deal with the problems caused by the monkeys, and he said that the activity of burning cookies will be carried out regularly to force them to leave. residential areas.
A section of local residents, however, questioned the forest department’s move to scare away the primates by burning wood and claimed that a long-term solution could not be achieved in this process. They suggested that the monkey should be captured and sent to a protected area and sought the intervention of Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary.
Residents, who claim that there are thousands of monkeys in Panchgram, informed the forest officials on Thursday about the problems they are facing and asked them to find a permanent solution. One of the residents said that the monkeys are roaming freely in the residential areas, which is the reason why people are afraid to come out of the houses. Living in the area has become dangerous, said residents.
An elderly person said that the monkeys used to live in the hilly areas around the Cachar Panchgram factory in the past, but they came down and established a habitat near residential areas after they were vacated by the factory workers a few months ago. Cruel animals often commit crimes that endanger life and property, the person said.
Another local resident suspected that the forest department’s move to scare the monkeys by burning firecrackers may backfire and that the uncontrolled animals, which have already become uncontrollable, may start to attack the local people with more fear and anger. Residents have asked the government to come up with a reasonable solution for the monkeys, while ensuring that the residents do not suffer.
