2020 Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain, put in a powerful performance in the final of the 2022 ASBC Asian Elite Championships in Jordan on Wednesday.
Lovlina (75kg) faced Seong Suyeon from South Korea in her semi-final match. Right from the start, Lovlina effectively used her clever techniques and tactics to take advantage of her opponent to win 5:0 by unanimous decision, according to a press release. Boxing Federation of India (BFI).
In all three rounds, the Assam-born boxer displayed her immense power and superior technical skills to defeat the South Korean and did not give her any chance to come back in the match.
Lovlina, who holds two Asian Championship bronze medals to her name is now guaranteed this silver edition, confirming her best ever performance in the competition.
Lovlina, Alfiya Pathan (81+kg), Parveen (63kg), and Minakshi (52kg) equally dominated their semi-final victory with a 5:0 unanimous decision win.
It is worth noting that Lovlina Borgohain became the first athlete from the northeastern state of Assam, and the third Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal, joining the legends MC Mary Kom and Vijender Singh. Borgohain won a bronze medal in the women’s welterweight event at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
The ace-pugilist won the junior national championship in 2012, and has been quickly making waves internationally starting with a silver medal at the 2013 Women’s Youth National Cup in Serbia. She finished with a medal at the 2014 National Junior Women’s Cup and followed it up with silver at the next cup.
India’s total of 12 medals in this year’s prestigious competition is the third highest among all competing nations. This tournament was attended by 267 boxers from 27 countries, one of the top boxing countries.
The women’s final will be held on Friday, while the men’s final will be held on Saturday.
