Gaming laptops are generally considered to be loud machines, especially the thinner ones. However, this should not be taken as a free pass for them to be as recklessly loud as possible. Most ultrathin models like the Razer Blade 15 or Asus Zephyrus G14 tend to peak at 45 dB(A) each when gaming and some can go as high as 50 dB(A). The 14-inch Acer Predator Triton 300 SE is one of the loudest ever recorded at an alarming 60.1 dB(A).
You don’t even have to try very hard to get the Acer laptop to run as high as it does. We are able to reach the 60 dB(A) mark just by regular titles like The Witcher 3 on Performance (ie, Turbo) mode. The fans are so loud that it’s hard to hear in-game dialogue, footsteps and other audio cues without a pair of headphones.
Setting the laptop to Balanced mode instead of Performance mode significantly lowers the fan’s ceiling to 47 dB(A). Doing so, however, would drop GPU clock rates and board power draw from 1830 MHz and 93 W to 1605 MHz and 80 W, respectively, to represent a 6 percent drop in graphics performance. In other words, owners need to enable Performance mode and stop the screeching fan if they want to get the most out of their Acer laptop. On the other hand, it’s a small hit to performance compared to the lower fan noise, so some users may find the trade-off well worth it.

After graduating with a BS degree in environmental hydrodynamics from the University of California, I studied reactor physics to become licensed by the US NRC to operate nuclear reactors. Your appreciation for everyday consumer electronics is amazing after working with modern nuclear reactor systems that were brilliantly powered by computers from the 80’s. When I’m not managing the day-to-day activities and US review articles on Notebookcheck, you can catch me following the eSports scene and the latest gaming news.
