The Assam government will reopen any previous case of unusual death if the family of the deceased wants it and the police think there are gaps in the investigation.

Such families can approach the Inspector General of Police (SP) concerned with their grievances about the cases being taken up again, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday.

“A tip-off in this regard was given to the police during a recent meeting with the State SP,” he said while briefing the media about the rape and murder of a 13-year-old girl who worked at Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). ) sack of Darrang district.

The CID has arrested the suspended SP of the district, the Additional SP and the officer-in-charge of Dhula station in a case registered in June against an accused who took money from him to lighten the case.

Apart from SSB Jawan, a judge and three doctors who “falsified” evidence were also arrested.

“In any unusual case of death, if the authorities feel that the investigation is not over or the case can be investigated in depth, they can meet the SP. The SP will look into the case if there is a gray area. It could be 15-year-old case. There is no time limit in criminal cases,” said Mr. Sarma.

He also said that the concerned SP and Deputy Inspector General will visit the accident site after registering any case of unnatural death or reporting it henceforth. “The case will not be closed until they are satisfied,” he added.

Stating that efforts are being made to strengthen this system, the chief minister said, “In most cases of rape and murder of domestic help, the accused claim that the victim committed suicide. Sometimes, autopsy reports and investigations don’t help the police, rather they help the accused. “

He said he was informed about the Darrang incident in a WhatsApp message late at night. “I suspected something was wrong as the police arrested the accused prime minister after I intervened,” he said.

“The court will decide [if those arrested are guilty] but our investigation shows that there is a compromise from the OC, SP and the judge of the three doctors,” said Mr. Sarma, while sending a strong message to the police, judges and doctors to perform their duties effectively.
