SILCHARAssam police arrested an Afghan national on Monday for living on an invalid document in Karimganj district of southern Assam.
The arrested person Madgai Hemat Khail is from Kabul, Afghanistan.
Sources said that a police team, based on a tip-off, conducted an operation in Kanishail (under Karimganj North council), about 58km from Silchar, on Monday evening and arrested Madgai Hemat. Khail rented his house.
The investigation conducted in this matter revealed that Madgai came to India with a valid passport and medical visa several years ago, but did not return to his country despite the expiry of the visa.
When he came to India, he met a woman named Fatima Begum of Mangaldai in Darrang district and later married her. After the visa expired, Madgai contacted a broker who prepared Indian documents, including PAN card, bank passbook and driving license, after which Madgai started living in Guwahati as an Indian citizen. These documents, in the name of Zaheer Khan, were recovered by the police from Madgai, sources said.
In Guwahati, Zaheer Khan worked in a financial company, from which he moved to Karimganj and lived in a rented house in Kanishail, where he was arrested. After arresting Madgai, the police took him to the Karimganj Sadar police station, where he was interrogated for hours, sources said.
Police sources said that the matter is being investigated from all possible angles, including possible links to any militant outfits.
