An armed man was shot and killed by police Thursday after engaging in a “violent struggle” at a Bronx bodega that spilled into the street, police said.
Chief of Detectives James Essig said the 21-year-old was stabbed during the struggle, forced the attacker out of the bodega and opened fire.
The gunman, whose name was not immediately released, was confronted by plainclothes officers parked outside while investigating an unrelated case.
The violence began after the 29-year-old stabbing man parked a white Lexus at Hull Avenue and East Gun Hill Road and entered a bodega around 11:30 a.m., police said.
The man “engaged in a violent struggle” with the 21-year-old and stabbed him multiple times, Essig said, adding that the fight was caught on surveillance camera.
The assailant fled the bodega and got into his Lexus, whereupon the young man pulled a gun and fired into the car “at point blank range,” Essig said.
Cops with the Queens Violent Felony Squad jumped out of their unmarked police vehicle and confronted the gunman, firing several times, Essig said.
He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
It is not clear how many rounds were fired by the police. The officers, two detectives and a sergeant, were in plain clothes and did not have body-worn cameras.
A 29-year-old man was caught by the police at a nearby barber shop and taken into custody. He was being treated at the hospital for a head wound, Essig said.
