Assam: 8,000 liters of stolen oil condensate seized, 4 arrested | Media Pyro

At least four people have been arrested for allegedly stealing 8,000 liters of oil condensate from Assam’s Dibrugarh district, a senior police official said on Wednesday.

Condensate oil is a mixture of light liquid hydrocarbons, similar to very light crude oil. They occur as natural gas vapors and can be dissolved in crude oil or can occur separately in oil reservoirs.

Police seized a tanker carrying 8,000 liters of stolen oil near the Bogibeel bridge over the Brahmaputra river.

The official said that it is suspected to be stolen from the transport pipeline of PSUs Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) or Oil India Limited (OIL).

“Four people involved in the raft have been arrested. The tanker was traveling from Naharani area of Sivasagar district to Dhemaji when it was intercepted by the police on Tuesday,” he added.

Such theft of oil from tankers and pipelines is common in Upper Assam.

Due to the rise in oil theft and theft, OIL started drone surveillance in October last year for its equipment and oil and gas pipelines in Assam.

When separated from natural gas, condensate is generally treated as crude oil. It can be mixed with other heavier crude streams or sent directly to market via pipeline or tanker.
