The minority All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of communicating a new plan to give land rights to certain sections of the people.
Inaugurating Mission Basundhara 2.0 on November 14, the Chief Minister said that the basis of this plan is to give land rights to those who have lived in certain areas for at least three centuries but have no official records.
But he said that the land rights will be given to the indigenous people of the area through self-identification. He also said that people living in ‘char’ (sand created by silt along the river), blocking Majuli district as it is a “permanent island”, will not be eligible for the scheme due to environmental reasons.
Most sandbars are inhabited by Bengali or Bengali-speaking Muslims, often seen as ‘Bangladeshi’ in Assam.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, AIUDF senior leader and MP Aminul Islam said, “We appreciate the Prime Minister’s initiative to correct land records, but we are against the move to give land rights to what he considers to be indigenous people.” exonia (land that cannot be legally transferred or inherited.”

Such a move violates the provisions of the Indian constitution, which provides equal rights to every Indian regardless of community, said Mr. Islam.
The AIUDF also said there was no reason to exclude “riverine islands deemed unsettled or irregular” from the system.
“There are many sands that are stable for 15-20 years and are not prone to erosion. A certain time must be given for the settlement of the land of these islands. This is again a community decision,” said Mr. Islam.
AIUDF also challenged the order against Mr. The Muslim population is more in these districts.
The Chief Minister on Monday said that the government will earn Rs 1,500 crore in land revenue annually if land rights are given to unregistered people. This can be done by reforming the system, verifying the zoning of the lands and adjusting the tax brackets.
The first phase of Mission Baundhara, a government scheme to address all types of land issues, was launched in October 2021 and continued till May 2022. About 6,00,000 applicants have benefited from the scheme.
