Guwahati (Assam) [India]November 3 (ANI): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the state government is keen to facilitate the Assam Medical College to transform it into a modern research institute dealing with new age diseases.
Speaking at the platinum jubilee celebration of AMC in Dibrugarh on Thursday, Chief Minister Assam Sarma said that this premier institution needs to upgrade itself into a modern medical institution with enough research to deal with serious diseases.
He also asked the AMC to coordinate collaboration between the State government and IIT Guwahati for advanced medical research.
Paying tribute to British Donors Dr John Berry White and Gopinath Bordoloi for their help in founding AMC, Sarma said, “The State Government will give Rs. 300 crore to AMC for construction of houses. faculty and student accommodation.”
Lauding AMC for maintaining its rich medical education and medical heritage, he asked the college authorities to initiate its growth and development in harmony with its green land.
“75 years is a long time. During this period, AMC has produced many doctors who are now leaders in their chosen professions,” he said.
On this occasion, he congratulated the students who graduated from the university. He personally thanked the graduates of the 1947 batch Kamakhya Prasad Chakraborty who was personally present at the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

He also urged the Vice-Chancellor of the Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences to award an award in the name of philanthropist John Berry White with a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh to felicitate the best MBBS graduates in the state.
Chief Minister Dr Sarma said, “AMC since its inception has been on its feet to serve humanity.”
On this occasion, the Chief Minister also released the Platinum Jubilee Postal Seal.
He also flagged off the services of nine Advanced Life Support Ambulances provided by ONGC as part of its CSR activities on this occasion. These nine ambulances will be provided to nine medical colleges and hospitals in the region.
Minister Sarma, while acknowledging the crucial role played by AMC during the COVID-19 pandemic, thanked the AMC brothers.
“It is a continuous effort that several human lives have been saved. The state government is committed to ensure that everyone living in the state has access to an advanced, accessible and affordable health system. Until 24 , he said.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Keshab Mahanta, and Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Rameshwar Teli also spoke at the venue.
