The All India United Democratic Front on Wednesday accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of sharing a plan to give land rights to the residents of the state. The Hindu said.
On November 14, Sarma launched Mission Basundhara 2.0, in which land rights will be given only to indigenous people. He said residents of “char” areas would not qualify for the scheme due to environmental reasons. However, he added that the ban will not apply to Majuli district as it is an official island.
Chars are sands created by the deposition of river sand. Most of such bars are dominated by Bengali speaking Muslims.
On Wednesday, All India United Democratic Front Joint Secretary Aminul Islam questioned whether only those who voted for the Bharatiya Janata Party would be recognized as indigenous people, he said. Sarma said on November 14 that Mission Basundhara 2.0 is only for “indigenous people who must be three generations” and that the benefits will be given on the basis of self-certification.

In this, Islam said that it is difficult for the residents of chars to show a certificate of residence for three generations, as the area of the soil changes every year due to soil erosion.
Sarma claimed that the Assam government would get up to Rs 1,500 crore in land revenue every year if land rights were given to unregistered residents.
The first phase of Operation Basundhara was conducted from October 2021 to May this year. About 6,00,000 applicants have benefited from the scheme.
