Guwahati: Leader of the Opposition in Assam Debabrata Saikia Congress on Friday urged Meghalaya Governor Brig (Retd) BD Mishra to inquire into the alleged attacks by tribals in the neighboring state.
Writing to Mishra, Saikia said that a detailed answer should be sought from the state government as to why such incidents are happening so often, violating the fundamental rights of non-tribal citizens of Meghalaya.
“I demand that an explanation of the recent events should be called from the government led by Conrad Sangma and that a commission of inquiry be formed to ensure a proper investigation into the same,” the letter said.
Saikia pointed out that earlier this week a protest by some organizations led to widespread chaos in Shillong and according to media reports, protesters attacked pedestrians while the police remained “mute spectators”.
“It was seen that despite the presence of the police on the rally route, no action was taken against the attackers. While the protestors were mostly targeting the non-tribal citizens of the region, many tragic incidents such as vandalism, violence against women and others have reported the same incident,” he added.
Citing several incidents, Saikia alleged that they underscored the Meghalaya government’s discrimination against non-tribal citizens of the state.
“A directive committee should be formed which should be headed by a judge of the Meghalaya High Court or equivalent rank to deal with the issues faced by non-tribals in the state,” he said in the letter to the Governor.
