Sarma described the event as historic. The Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Assam and Bright Star Investments Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai will herald a new beginning in medical education in Assam. This is the first time that the Assam government has partnered with the private sector to build medical college infrastructure in the state. The CEO, therefore, thanked Radhakishan Damani, founder of Bright Star Investments Pvt. Ltd., for coming up with this wonderful philanthropic mission. He said that showing its social commitments, Bright Star Investments Pvt. LTD. came forward to support the cause of medical education in Assam.
Sarma also said, “It is indeed a matter of pride and joy to respond to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to the corporate sector to provide more opportunities to Indian students in the field of medical education, Bright Star Investments Pvt. Ltd. It has chosen Assam to be the first state to start this honorable collaboration.” He, therefore, thanked Radhakishnan Damani and everyone associated with this company for this charitable work.
The minister said that almost 60 years ago in the year 1960, the first medical college was established in Guwahati to meet the needs of the people of the state as well as neighboring states. Since then, the population of the region has doubled, as has the number of students aspiring to pursue medical education. Considering the growing demand, the government has taken several measures to increase medical education opportunities and advanced health care facilities by establishing medical colleges in different parts of the state. However, a second medical college in Guwahati which is the nerve center of the Northeast’s economic and social dynamics has been a felt need for some time.
Therefore, taking a proactive step to address these requirements, the Government of Assam has taken up the task of establishing a Medical College in Guwahati by providing a 1000 bedded hospital and an academic facility with boys and girls hostels for 100 students. An MBBS. As a result Bright Star Investments Pvt Limited has come up with a CSR contribution of Rs 150 crore for the development of infrastructure in the Academic Block, UG and Intern Hostels of this Medical College.
Sarma also said that the state government is working on the vision of one medical college in every district in Assam. Already, the government has taken steps to establish 15 new medical colleges in addition to the existing nine educational institutions. Out of the 15 new medical colleges, seven medical colleges are being established in Nalbari, Nagaon, Kokrajhar, Tinsukia, Charideo, Biswanath Chariali and the second medical college in Guwahati.
The government will start construction of five more medical colleges at Golaghat, Bongaigaon, Marigaon, Tamulpur and Dhemaji during this month and work on three more proposed medical colleges at Sivasagar, Karimganj and Goalpara will be taken up soon. . In the next five years Assam will have a total of 24 Medical Colleges, which will greatly improve the availability of doctors and healthcare in the state.
The minister also said that with the increase in medical colleges in the State, the number of MBBS seats has also increased from 726 in 2014 to 1200 in 2022. Till 2014 the total number of Post Graduate (PG) seats in Assam was 395. In 2022 the total number of PG seats will be increased to 711. Access to doctors has improved significantly. Also, 44 special seats are currently available in various institutions under the Government of Assam. Furthermore, once the construction of the proposed medical colleges is completed, the state will have 2700 MBBS seats, which will greatly enhance the medical education opportunity in Assam.
The minister expressed his confidence that the signing of the MoU has started a new beginning for Assam. He said that in the coming days there will be many collaborations of this kind that will greatly contribute to the health education in the region.
