Shillon: Assam began their campaign in the second edition of the North East Olympic Games on a disappointing note after beating Manipur 0-3 in the men’s U-21 football tournament at the MFA Turf on Monday.
The two teams started with a strong fight until the end of the first half before Manipur broke the deadlock in the 45th minute and took the lead 1-0. After the break in the second half of the game, the Manipuri boys came back strongly to push for another goal, thanks to a successful penalty in the 65th minute.
After scoring several goals, Assam came close to scoring in minutes, but failed to penetrate Manipur’s tough defense despite several attempts. Manipur came back with the third goal in the 87th minute to tie the game.
Assam and Manipur are in Group 1 with Mizoram, while hosts Meghalaya are in Group 2 with Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. Tripura, unfortunately, had to withdraw from men’s and women’s football, while Nagaland only sent their men’s team.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the U-17 Assam women’s football team will open their campaign against Manipur. For women, Manipur, Assam and Sikkim are in Group 1 and Mizoram, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh are in Group 2.
The 2nd NEOG football tournament started on Monday, three days before the opening ceremony of the tournament which will last for a week on the 10th of November, and this decision was made with the players and their need to have days a break between games.
