The Assam Police has asked all the private madrasas operating in the state to submit the details to the higher education department by December 1.
Police verification of madrasa teachers from outside the state has also been made mandatory.
A directive in this regard was given at a meeting on Wednesday, which was attended by the director general of police of Assam, Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta, officials of the higher education department and representatives of at least five conglomerates of private madrasas, in Guwahati.
The state police said that a website is being prepared to upload the details and therefore the madrassas have been asked to submit the details in written form until the portal is opened. The meeting decided that a distance of three kilometers should be maintained between two private madrasas and that the madrasas should have at least 100 students. “Steps are to be taken to merge the madrassas at a distance of three kilometers,” said a statement issued by the Assam Police.
In September of this year, a meeting was held after the arrest of several people, including Madrasah teachers, who were accused of having links to “jihadist organizations.” Mahanta said steps have been taken to ensure that madrasas are not used for illegal and ‘Jihad’ activities. Three private madrassas were also expelled following the arrest of teachers accused of having links with terrorist organizations.
Mahanta had earlier said that there are around 1,000 private madrasas in Assam, some of which are unregistered.
The BJP-led government had earlier closed nearly 800 government-aided madrasas in the state saying that religious education cannot be allowed with public funding. The government has also asked the state police to increase vigilance against private Madrasahs to prevent these institutions from being used by illegal entities.
