SHILLONG: Assam and Meghalaya have promised to jointly develop Umiam Lake and make it a “world-class” destination for water sports.

This was announced by the Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma, while addressing the closing ceremony of the Rising Sun Festival 2022 at Umiam Lake in Meghalaya on November 5.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the two states along with the Indian Army will work hard to promote water sports in the North East.

He said that Assam and Meghalaya should take concrete steps in future to promote water sports in Umiam Lake.

The first three-day Rising Sun Water Fest 2022 held at the Umiam Sports Center in Meghalaya took the water and sports craze to a whole new level, the Assam CM said.

He added that this event provided a platform for teams and the sports community to showcase their skills.

Thanking the Eastern Command of the Indian Army, Gajraj Corps and Red Horn Division for organizing the event, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Umiam Lake, the venue of the event, will be converted into an attractive tourist destination.

Seeking support from the Meghalaya government, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the governments of the two states will join hands with the help of the Indian Army to turn Umiam into a world-class venue for water sports.

He also hoped that when this event is extended, the socio-economic development and local infrastructure will reach a different level than before.
