MELROSE – The Melrose Police Department is actively investigating a shooting that occurred this evening, Chief Michael L. Lyle reports.
At 7:30 p.m., police responded to the area of 44 Waverly Place off West Wyoming Drive for a report of a shooting.
Responding officers found two males suffering from gunshot wounds to the lower extremities. Officers immediately began rendering medical aid at the scene until paramedics arrived. The injured were taken to area hospitals by ambulance. Their condition is unknown at this time.
According to the initial investigation, a verbal dispute between the suspect and the victims led to the shooting. It is believed that the parties know each other and this is not a coincidence.
Police are actively searching for the accused. The suspect is described as a 130-140 pound white male with a beard and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.
The suspect is suspected of having a weapon. Anyone who believes they see someone fitting this description should call 911. Do not approach that man.
Motorists and pedestrians are asked to avoid the area as police continue to investigate. Residents should expect to see a significant police presence in the area over the next few hours.
