BENGALURU: Election dates for the Karnataka assembly are yet to be announced, but parties are already ramping up poll talk. In this role Vokkaliga leader and Congress state president DK Shivakumar, is busy navigating a legal minefield.

Shivakumar, who wants to focus on bringing his party back to power, has set his calendar for November.

On November 14, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s birthday, the Congress has listed official duties but Shivakumar will face the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in New Delhi. More than a week ago, his brother and MP DK Suresh was questioned by the ED on the same issue — donations made to the Young India Trust which publishes the National Herald newspaper. Other Congress leaders from Karnataka who contributed are also in question.

On November 18, Shivakumar has to appear in a CBI case listed in the Karnataka High Court and on November 19, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s birthday, he will face Income Tax and two other cases in the city civil court in Bengaluru. On November 21, a case has been listed in a court in Chennai in Tamil Nadu, and on November 23, he will appear before the ED in Delhi.

For all these cases and prosecutions, Shivakumar had to be legal, leaving him little time for team work throughout the month. Congress, too, has a busy calendar till the elections, and there will be a Bus Yatra and Tractor Yatra. The party is also planning to announce the list of candidates in December.

“Shivakumar is one of the most controversial figures in India today. He started facing these challenges after he protected the members of the Gujarat Assembly from voting in the Rajya Sabha elections of the end of Ahmed Patel,” said political analyst BS Murthy. “We have seen administrations going after opponents like Nawab Malik and Sanjay Raut in Maharashtra. This is a message to all political leaders to fall in line or face the music.” Shivakumar was unavailable for comment.

Opposition party leaders say that the BJP is using the ED, IT and CBI as political tools to neutralize their opponents, especially the Congress, Trinamool Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). AAP state president Prithvi Reddy said, “Wherever the BJP faces serious political opposition, it uses these offices to harm its opponents. Delhi’s health minister Satyendra Jain, who led the campaign in Himachal Pradesh, is an example of this.
