CEDAR RAPIDS — Police responded to a shooting near Regis Middle School in northeast Cedar Rapids Thursday afternoon and put the school on lockdown while officers investigated.
About 20 units were dispatched to the area. Police confirmed the shooting, but no further details were available. 735 Prairie Dr. near Mount Mercy University. The school is in NE.
Regis officials sent a text message to parents just before 4 p.m., saying the building was on lockdown due to an active shooter in the area.
“A Mount Mercy cross country runner was shot while running,” the text message read. “We are waiting until law enforcement deems it safe for us to be removed from the lockdown. Our staff and students are safe and authorities are present.
But Tad Hulst, head coach of the Mount Mercy cross country team, did not practice Thursday because the shooter report was active. Till 4:30 pm, the group was holed up in his office, he said. The entire team was counted except those who had class conflicts and were absent from practice, Hulst said.
Regis later sent a message to parents: “There has been a shooting in the neighborhood around Regis. The person who was shot was not a Regis student, but came to our campus to find safety. Immediately the authorities were called and an ambulance reached the spot. We have been instructed to remain on lockdown until further notice due to an active shooter in the area. All students and staff in the building are safe and following our lockdown protocol.
Students would be dismissed from the Regis at 2:50pm
