Aurora, Colo. — Police in Colorado said Saturday they have arrested an 18-year-old suspect as part of an investigation into a Friday shooting that killed a 12-year-old boy and wounded a 14-year-old boy. The suspect has been charged with first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder, officials said.

Two related victims were shot while walking down the street in Aurora just before 3 p.m. Friday, KCNC-TV CBS Colorado reported, citing police. Both were taken to the hospital, where the 12-year-old died a short time later. The 14-year-old remains in hospital with serious injuries, police said.

Police said “preliminary details received by responding officers” led them to believe the shots were fired at the victims from a suspicious car. Officials said the vehicle was found.

“Aurora police officers were able to quickly identify and detain a person of interest known to the victims,” ​​APD said in a news release.

According to KCNC-TV CBS Colorado, officials are not actively searching for additional suspects at this time. The news agency reports that the cause of the shooting is not yet known.

At the scene of the shooting Friday night, APD’s Matt Longshore told reporters, “It’s a very tragic situation.”
