Google’s VPN, which until now was only available to Android users with a Google One subscription, will now be available for desktop devices running Windows and macOS.
Business VPN allow users to securely access company resources from remote locations, while consumer (or personal) VPNs are a great way to improve your online privacy and can give you extra protection when you’re using unsecured public Wi-Fi networks that anyone can connect to .
Google’s VPN doesn’t have all the capabilities or features of a standard VPN, and of course it’s only available with a cloud storage subscription, but it’s an intriguing move by the tech giant into a booming market.
Google One VPN features and pricing
Google One cloud storage subscription holders have had access to Google One VPN for about two years now, after it was added to the $9.99/month 2TB plan.
Since then, the product has also been added to the Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro. You’ll need a Google One subscription, though, and it’s not yet a standalone product.
However, Google One cannot be used to unblock content from other countries, which is one of the key features that almost all VPNs offer.
Google One VPN Registration Policy
Google does state that some minimal logging is done to ensure quality of service, but your network traffic and IP address are not associated with your VPN activity.
Google will collect data on VPN tunnel uptime, VPN tunnel setup latency, and VPN tunnel failure rates, as well as other performance-related information for “monitoring and debugging purposes.”
Google says all of this data is “aggregated,” which effectively means that individual users cannot be identified.
Google’s full explanation of what a VPN does and doesn’t include can be had found here.
What do VPNs actually do?
VPNs transmit your data through encrypted tunnels to private servers while masking your IP address. The websites you visit will see the IP address of the server you connected to, not your device.
This process significantly increases user privacy on the Internet. In 2022 the best VPNs often offer additional tools along with privacy software.
Surfshark’s antivirus and VPN package, Surfshark One, is a great example of this – and only one $3.98 per monthit is extremely good value for (very little) money.
With a VPN like Surfshark, plus increased privacy, you’ll be able to unblock content only available in other countries by connecting to servers located there, and make it nearly impossible for your ISP to throttle your bandwidth.
Google VPN will have some serious work to do to break into an industry already crowded with thriving companies if it ever wants to develop a VPN offering for consumers. There’s no reason to trust a big tech company when you can choose a dedicated VPN company that’s been around for years and has a stellar reputation to help you stay safe online.
