Government of Assam will spend Rs 300 crore to upgrade the infrastructure of medical college in Assam | Media Pyro

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the state government is keen to facilitate the Assam Medical College to transform it into a state of the art research institute that deals with new age-related diseases.

Speaking at the platinum jubilee celebration of AMC in Dibrugarh Sarma said that the premier institute needs to upgrade itself as a state of the art medical institute with enough research to deal with serious diseases. He also asked the AMC to coordinate the collaboration between the State government and IIT Guwahati for advanced medical research.

Sarma giving a rich tribute to British philanthropist Dr. John Berry White and Gopinath Bordoloi to contribute to the foundation of AMC, said that the state government will give Rs. 300 crore has been given to the AMC for the construction of faculty residences and student hostels.

Lauding the AMC for preserving its rich heritage of medical and medical education, he asked the college authorities to initiate its growth and development as a green master. He said 75 years is a long time and during that time, AMC has produced many doctors who are now leaders in their chosen professions.

He congratulated the graduates on this occasion. He personally thanked the graduates of 1947 batch Kamakhya Prasad Chakraborty who was personally present at the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. He also urged the Vice-Chancellor of the Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences to award an award in the name of philanthropist John Berry White with a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh to felicitate the best MBBS graduates in the state.

Sarma said that AMC since its inception has been on its feet to serve humanity. He also released the Platinum Jubilee Postal Stamp on this occasion. The Chief Minister also inaugurated the services of nine Advanced Life Support Ambulances provided by ONGC as part of its CSR activities on this occasion. These nine ambulances will be provided to nine medical colleges and hospitals in the region.

Acknowledging the decisive role played by AMC during the COVID 19 crisis, Sarma thanked the AMC brothers. He said that due to her unceasing sacrifice several human lives were saved. The Prime Minister also said that the government is committed to providing advanced, accessible and affordable health care to everyone in the region. Therefore, the Regional Government has decided to increase the number of medical colleges in the region to 24.
