A Lafayette police officer shot and killed a man after an officer was injured in a confrontation over a stolen vehicle early Tuesday, the Lafayette Police Department said in a statement.

Around 1:22 a.m. Tuesday, officers received a license plate reader alert about a stolen vehicle at South Boulder Road and Dixon Avenue. Officers found a Toyota Camry unoccupied at a Circle K gas station pump.

When officers arrived, the suspects exited the store and fled on foot. One of the suspects returned to the Camry and began firing a handgun at officers, striking one in the leg, the department said.

An officer then opened fire and the man died in a stolen vehicle at the gas station. Another was taken into custody.

The injured officer is in stable condition after being admitted to the hospital. The officer was also placed on administrative leave.

The Boulder County Investigation Team, known as the Boulder Critical Incident Team (BCIT), will investigate the shooting.
