Toronto police say a man has been charged with three counts of attempted murder and multiple firearms charges after he opened fire on police officers in Scarborough Tuesday night.

The incident took place at Kennedy Road and Eglinton Avenue East around 8:30 p.m.

Soup. Steve Watts, of Toronto police’s gun and gang task force, told reporters at a news conference Wednesday morning that officers tried to arrest the man at his home in March after allegedly discharging a firearm again.

Watts said the 35-year-old turned and ran when he saw police.

“While fleeing, the suspect turned, we allege he produced a handgun, and fired multiple rounds at the officers, who were immediately forced to take cover to protect themselves,” he said.

The man was able to get back inside the home while police were conducting the robbery, Watts said, and then shot at officers again from inside.

“Although the officers were subjected to extensive gunfire, no one was injured,” Watts said, although a police vehicle and a neighboring home were hit by gunfire. Watts said the police did not fire at him.

The service’s emergency task force was called to the scene and established communication with the man, Watts said. He surrendered after two and a half hours of negotiations.

Brian Couto, a neighbor who lives across the street, said he and his family heard multiple gunshots and saw police on the street with guns drawn. They watched much of what happened through security camera feeds in their basement.

“It was pretty scary for a while there because we weren’t sure what was going on,” Couto said.

Watts said the suspect was arraigned Wednesday morning and remains in custody.
