The National Court of Investigation (NIA) remanded a Manipur Naga Peoples’ Front cadre arrested on Tuesday in connection with an ambush on the convoy of an Assam Rifles officer in Manipur last year.
The militants were arrested on Saturday.
A team of security forces including the Manipur police, an NIA team, and four Assam Rifles officers arrested Machukring Zamshim Shimray, alias Ningkham, of New Cannon village in Ukhrul district, a wanted militant in Manipur. Naga People’s Front (MNPF).

He was produced before the special magistrate (NIA), Manipur on Wednesday.
A special judge (NIA) released him in fifteen days of prison until November 29, after finding enough evidence to show that the accused is involved in the 2021 ambush.
Before the court, the attorney general of NIA submitted that as per the order of Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India on November 26, 2021, NIA, New Delhi has registered a case of ambush under section 121/121A/302/307/326 and 34 IPC, section 10 and 20 UP(P) Act, 25(1-C) Arms Act and section 5 Explosives.
The ambush took place near S Sehken village under Behiang police station near the Indo-Myanmar border. Colonel Tripathi was said to be returning to his headquarters with his wife and six-year-old son from the Behiang company post when they were attacked.
At least six jawans, including a havildar, driver CO, and three members of the Emergency Response Team were also injured in the attack. Two rebel groups – the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and the MNPF – claimed responsibility for the attack.
The arrested accused was taken into custody on November 5 by the NIA and remained in custody until November 6.
During the investigation, the accused revealed and confessed that he was directly involved in the ambush attack on the Assam Rifles and also revealed the involvement of many leaders of the MNPF.
As the investigation is in the initial stage, the PP of NIA prayed that the accused should be kept in judicial custody so that the NIA can investigate the case properly.
However, the accused’s lawyer applied for bail claiming that he did not commit the crime.
On November 13, 2021, commandant 46 Assam Rifles Vivplap Tripathi and his family along with four Assam Rifles jawans were killed after the officer’s convoy was heavily attacked by militants in Churachandpur district of Manipur.
The NIA has announced a cash reward ₹4 lakh for information on Shimray, who, according to the investigating agency, was an active member of the MNPF and was directly involved in the ambush that resulted in the death of seven people.
