DORAL, Fla. – Miami-Dade County partnered with several organizations to help some of the more than 100,000 Venezuelan immigrants who may have four days to reapply for Temporary Protection Status.

President Joe Biden’s administration extended TPS for Venezuelans in September, but the renewal is not automatic. Immigrants who already have TPS protection must reapply by November 7.

About 550,000 Venezuelans have moved to the United States since 2015, but those who arrived before March of last year are subject to 18 months of protection.

Bellalyn Bernal moved to Miami-Dade on February 21, 2014, and was one of the Venezuelans who benefited from Miami-Dade County’s free event on Thursday.

“I’m very grateful for this country,” Bernal said in Spanish.

Juan Salcedo, the coordinator of the event, said the goal is to make sure that all Venezuelans who applied for TPS when it was available for the first time in March will apply again.

“Sometimes private immigration attorneys charge up to $1,000 for these applications,” Salcedo said. “Today we are working for free.”

The program continues Friday at Morgan Levy Park, at 5300 NW 102 Ave., in Doral. Appointments were available from 10 a.m. and Salcedo said attendance was good.

Salcedo urged those in need of free legal assistance to visit this page to schedule an appointment, call 1-800-600-5762 or email TPS@miamidade.gov. Lawyers, para-administrators or students interested in volunteering should visit this page.
