“In another victory in the crusade against smuggling activities, the Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles under Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), recovered 420 cases of foreign origin cigarettes from worth Rs 5.46 crore in Ruantlang area near Tiau river in Champhai district,” said an official release.
Based on a tip-off, the operation was carried out by a joint team of Assam Rifles and Anti-Tax Force, Champai.
A senior officer of the Assam Rifles said that the Assam Rifles recovered the material which was dumped in the Ruantlang area near the Tiau River.
The estimated value of the foreign cigarettes received is Rs 5,46,00,000. The seized goods have been handed over to the excise department in Champai for further legal proceedings.

Further investigations are underway. Earlier on Wednesday, the Assam Rifles recovered a large quantity of cigarettes of foreign origin worth Rs 2.47 crore in Mizoram’s Champai district.
The Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles under Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), on Wednesday, recovered 190 cases of foreign origin cigarettes worth Rs 2.47 crore from Zotlang new area of Champhai district.
“A team of Assam Rifles recovered the items dumped in Zotlang area. The estimated value of the foreign cigarettes recovered is Rs 2,47,00,000. The seized items have been handed over to the Excise Department, Champhai for further legal action,” he said. said the officer.
