Aizawl: The Mizoram government has not received any response from Assam’s proposal to postpone the third round of border talks between the two neighboring states, an official said on Monday.
The border talks are scheduled to be held on November 4 in Guwahati.
Mizoram Home Department Additional Secretary Lalhriatpuia said they sent a written request to Assam last week urging it to postpone border talks in view of President Droupadi Murmu, who is visiting the state on November 3 and 4.
They suggested that the talks be held from November 9 to 11, he said.
“We have not yet received a response and information about the date of the meeting on the border dispute in Assam,” Lalhriatpuia said.
He said that the Assam government will finalize the new date.
Apart from the President’s visit, Chief Minister Zoramthanga also expressed concern that Home Minister Lalchamliana, who is leading the Mizoram delegation, would not be able to accompany either of them.
Land revenue minister Lalruatkima or forest minister TJ Lalnuntluanga, both of whom are currently on a trip outside the state, will be interviewed on November 4, the official said.
He said that Lalruatkima may participate in the talks if they are delayed. Mizoram shares a border of 164.6 kilometers with Assam.
In an effort to resolve the border dispute, delegations from the two states met twice in Aizawl and held video conferences five times after a violent clash in July last year that left seven people, including six policemen, dead. in Assam.
More than 60 were also injured in the clash, which took place in the disputed area of National Highway-306 near Vairengte village in Mizoram.
Chief Minister Zoramthanga and his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma also met twice in New Delhi in November last year and September this year to find an amicable solution to the vexed border dispute.
