San Antonio — The fatal shooting of an off-duty U.S. Border Patrol agent early Friday left people at a West Side apartment complex a little shaken.
San Antonio police said the agent told officers it happened after interrupting a carjacking at the complex, located near Ingram Road and Highway 151, around 2 a.m.

The agent told police he caught him and three others trespassing in a vehicle and confronted them.
He said one man pointed a handgun at him and the other fired at him.
He then drew his own weapon and struck the man in the left armpit, the agent said.
The police said that the suspects who committed the theft took the injured victim in the car and drove away.
Investigators later learned he had been discharged from the hospital, where he died.
Back at the apartment complex, Brian Malott and his wife were trying to make sense of the gunshot that had woken them up.
“She jumped up and went to the window. I said, ‘Kid, hit the ground running. Go! Get off!’, he said.
A few minutes later, Malott said he heard his neighbor, a Border Patrol agent, calling him from outside.
“He told me, he said ‘Neighbor, there’s someone in your truck. Get out quick.’ So I came out. He already had and got one of those,” Malott said.
Malott’s pickup turned out to be the vehicle targeted by the suspects.
He says they took a gun from the center console of his truck. He believes it is the same weapon the man pointed at the agent just before he was shot.
“The gun was covered in blood here,” he said, pointing to a wet spot on the ground.
Others, meanwhile, slept through the commotion but woke up to the news later.
Matthew Rios said he was surprised by the shooting but did not see the car crash.
“It’s definitely an issue here,” Rios said.
A relative who lives in the complex has had his vehicle stolen several times recently, he said.
Rios said he discovered his car had been stolen Thursday morning.
“Walked into the parking lot and there’s glass all over the floor and then the car is gone,” he said.
While the break-ins may not be unexpected for Rios, he says the fatal outcome was a bit of a shock.
