Cyber Monday sales are expected to exceed 200 billion dollars in 2022 – Online shopping is steadily increasing year-on-year, along with cybercrime such as fraud and identity theft. For many, concerns about safe online shopping are real-life. According to a new Norton study conducted online at August 2022 A survey of 1,000 American adults by The Harris Poll found that 1 in 4 American adults (25%) have been the victim of a scam while shopping online, with nearly 40 percent of shoppers reporting being a victim of a scam during the holiday shopping season. .
Holiday shopping and last-minute purchases can leave consumers feeling stressed and vulnerable, creating many opportunities for cybercriminals and identity thieves. Now is the time to take steps to protect yourself before the holiday shopping season.
“We want to help bring back the joy of the holiday season and give everyone the resources they need to shop safely online,” said Kevin Roundy, researcher and CTO at Norton Labs. “From inflation to supply chain issues, there are so many things out of our control this holiday season. Taking a moment to pause and take proactive steps to protect your digital and financial life before Cyber Monday is one way everyone can take back control.”
While a majority of Americans (89%) feel confident that they can shop safely online, nearly 43% admit they are unsure of the best ways to shop online this holiday season. With rising prices and limited supplies of the most popular gifts, consumers seem to be taking more risks than ever before when filling their baskets. In fact, more than 2 in 5 consumers report putting their personal information at risk in some way during the holiday season, leaving them vulnerable to identity theft and fraud.
The holidays can be a tumultuous time for shoppers, even without the risk of cybercriminals. Before online shoppers start checking off their holiday gift lists, they should prepare to shop safely and securely. Some tips from Norton experts include:
- Always buy from secure sites you trust – Before you buy, look for the little lock icon in the corner of the URL bar, which tells you that the web page you’re on has privacy protection. The URL of a secure site starts with “https”. These websites mask any data you provide, usually on pages that ask for passwords or financial information. Norton helps consumers shop safely online with products such as Norton Safe Web, which allows users to check for unsafe hyperlinks with Link Guard. Be safe – only do business online with retailers you trust and have shopped with before.
- Watch out for deals that are too good to be true. – Black Friday and Cyber Monday promotions have become a holiday shopping tradition. But if a website offers a deal that seems too good to be true, it probably is. “Special offers” and “low offers” can lead to phishing and scams. Be careful not to click on ads or suspicious emails. Compare prices and product photos on similar websites to confirm.
- Be careful when storing your credit card information in your accounts – Storing your credit card information on a retailer’s website can leave you vulnerable to future data breaches. And if a hacker gains access to your favorite merchant account, they can make purchases using your card. To avoid credit card fraud, carefully store credit card information on accounts unless it is required, and consider using a password manager such as Norton Password Manager to store your information in encrypted storage rather than online stores, or a digital wallet or app like Apple Pay or Google Pay to increase transaction security by protecting your account numbers from the merchant and potential hackers.
- Before donating, research charities – Before doing charitable transactions, make sure that the organization is legitimate. A good place to start is by checking the lists of watchdog groups such as CharityWatch, CharityNavigator, and the Wise Giving Alliance. If you can, donate directly, not through websites and spam emails. Charity scams take advantage of the generosity of others, especially during the holidays, leaving people vulnerable to phishing, identity theft and credit card fraud.
