Officers and supervisor involved in deadly Detroit shooting suspended | Media Pyro

Two police officers and a supervisor have been suspended after last week’s killing of a woman in the midst of a mental health crisis, the Free Press reports.

Why this is important: This is the second fatal police shooting of a person dealing with mental health issues since October.

• “Detroit has a mental health crisis,” Police Chief James White said Monday in announcing the suspensions, expecting opposition from police unions.

what happen: On Nov. 10, three police officers fired four rounds at a woman inside a West Side home during a struggle over a gun with a fourth officer. The woman did not fire the gun, White said.

• The girl’s mother called 911 saying her daughter had schizophrenia and that her grandson had been beaten and armed.

Specifically On Oct. 2, 20-year-old Porter Burks was shot 19 times by police during a mental health crisis.

Between the lines: While police released body camera footage two days after Burks was killed, White has not released footage of last week’s shooting.

• The chief said the board of police commissioners will recommend that the three be suspended without pay. The chief can unilaterally suspend officers, but board approval is required for salary reductions.
• The Office of Professional Development was tasked with deciding whether to demote the supervisor.
