Guwahati: The Assam government plans to convert the Assam Medical College (AMC) in Dibrugarh into a modern research institute to tackle new age-related diseases, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday.
He said this while attending the platinum jubilee celebrations of AMC – the oldest medical college in Assam.
Speaking on the occasion, Sarma said that the first institute needs to upgrade itself and become a modern medical institute with enough research to deal with serious diseases.
He also asked the medical college management to coordinate the collaboration between the state government and IIT Guwahati for advanced medical research.
The state government will give Rs 300 crore to the AMC to build teachers’ houses and students’ hostels, the Prime Minister said.
Praising the management of the medical college for preserving its rich heritage in the field of education and medicine, he asked the management of the college to initiate its growth and development like a green owner.
“Seventy-five years is a long time, and during this time, the medical college has produced many doctors who are now leaders in their chosen professions,” Sarma added.
Sarma, while acknowledging the dedicated role played by the AMC during the Covid-19 crisis thanked the fraternity of the medical college. He said that due to her unceasing sacrifice, several human lives were saved.
“The state government is committed to providing everyone in the state with an advanced, accessible and affordable health care system. Therefore, the state government has decided to increase the number of medical colleges to four and twenty,” he said.
The Platinum Jubilee Post Card was released on this occasion. Assam Health and Family Welfare Minister Keshab Mahanta, and Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Rameshwar Teli also attended the event.
