Omaha, Neb. (WOWT) – An investigation is underway with the OPD Homicide Unit after a shooting that left one person dead and seven others injured early Sunday night.
Officers went to 33rd & Ames just after 4 a.m. on a report of a shooting and found two victims with gunshot wounds.
Both were taken to Omaha Fire Nebraska Medical Center, where one died at the hospital.
Six more people were reportedly taken to Nebraska Medical Center and Bergen Mercy with life-threatening injuries.
Mayor Jean Stothert released a statement Sunday afternoon in response to the shooting.
“I offer my condolences to the family of the person who was killed this morning at the age of 33 and at AIIMS.
I have confidence in the Omaha Police Department to thoroughly investigate the shooting and provide the necessary resources to ensure public safety. Witnesses and others with information about this incident should cooperate with police or use Crime Stoppers to provide anonymous information. The grieving family and friends of the victims deserve to know what happened.
Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer also released a statement Sunday.
“It is imperative that the OPD parts happen together so that victims and their families can find redress. During this phase of the investigation, the after-hours party took place and an encounter resulted in a shootout. There is no indication that the shooting was accidental.
Additional OPD resources are being utilized and police presence will be increased for the time being.
Authorities are asking Omaha Crime Stoppers at 402-444-STOP or the P3 Tips mobile app for information and are eligible for a reward of up to $25,000 for anonymous tips leading to an arrest.
