Two Ottawa men were shot and killed in an evening shooting at a plaza in Orleans.
Ottawa police say the shooting at Tompkins Avenue and Tenth Line Road Wednesday night before 9 p.m. was a targeted incident.
“There was only one person in the middle of the road, so we went to help,” said Musa Siddiqui, owner of African BBQ House in the plaza.
“He was shot; shot three times, bleeding.”
Siddique said he saw the second person who had been shot inside the vehicle in the parking lot.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second person died of his injuries at a hospital early Wednesday, police said.
A third person was treated for non-life threatening injuries and released from the hospital later that night.
Krishel Kanin Murphy-Nimblett (28) and Mohammed Omar Mohammed (23) from Ottawa were killed.
A person in the plaza Wednesday night said several witnesses, including a nurse, rushed to help one of the victims.
She told me that he ran and said, “I’ve been shot, call an ambulance, get me to the hospital,” and he collapsed, and she immediately got there and put him in a state of recovery. I went there and helped,” said the man, who asked not to be identified.
“From there we just kept trying to get him conscious, we just kept trying to make sure he was OK. We had a nurse that helped us as well.”
He says the nurse began administering first aid before the paramedics arrived.
“After recovery, we tried to take off his shirt to find the bullet wound. After finding it, we removed his shirt completely,” he said. “He was passing out from there and the nurse started doing first aid and he regained consciousness and from there the paramedics got on the scene and took matters into their own hands.”
The witness says Muhammad was an old friend from high school.
“He was a basketball player. I remember playing GCBA with him and his older brother. They were good guys, really good,” he said. “I remember feeling a little heavy that day, and I was like, ‘Oh, he’s cool,’ and he was one of those guys who would shake my hand and put me around the crowd. .
“I’m glad I was there to help him. I really am. It’s a shame I didn’t realize it was him.”
There is no information about any suspects in the case.
Ottawa Police Staff Sgt. Jeff Pilon says investigators believe it was a “targeted” shooting.
“This is a very tragic event and two families have lost loved ones to guns in our city, and our thoughts are certainly with the families today,” Pilon said.
“There’s going to be a lot of investigative steps going on. It’s going to be interviewing anyone who was involved in any way, looking for and reviewing any kind of surveillance video, and a lot of forensic work to be done to assist. The investigation.”
The evening shooting rattled residents of the East Side neighborhood.
“This never happens in Orleans; it’s a residential area with families and small children,” said Brigitte Lalonde. “I’m shocked that this happened.”
“It’s crazy. We didn’t expect this to happen in this community,” said Lina Char, manager of High Ties. “It’s in Orleans, it’s crazy.”
