LAREDO, Texas – A 42-year-old Pearland resident has pleaded guilty to transporting 20 kilograms of meth and 900 grams of fentanyl, US Attorney Jennifer B. Lowery.
On June 24, Jose Luis Escareno attempted to enter the United States through the Juarez-Lincoln Port of Entry in Laredo. At the time, he was driving a pickup truck and towing a trailer.
When questioned, he claimed to own everything in the vehicle and trailer. A short time later, law enforcement found the drugs hidden in a small air conditioning unit in the trailer and a refrigerator in the truck. It was later determined to contain 21.40 kilograms of meth and 8,500 fentanyl pills weighing 931 grams.
As part of his plea, Escareno said the air conditioning unit belonged to a friend who paid him $150 to bring it to Houston. He also said that he bought and filled the refrigerators with what he had.
U.S. District Judge Diana Saldana will impose the sentence at a later date. At that time, Escareno faced prison terms and a maximum fine of $10 million.
He has been and will remain in jail for that trial.
Homeland Security Investigations conducted the investigation with the assistance of Border Patrol and Border Patrol. Assistant United States Attorney Paul A. Harrison is prosecuting the case.
