The Assam cabinet has approved the reform of Thana (police) level Nagrik Committees to provide a platform for communication between the police and the public.

In the cabinet meeting on Wednesday, it was said that the police station will be established under section 11 section 5 of the Assam Police Act, Nagrik or citizen’s committees to work as community liaison groups in the police stations.

The committee will include a Chairman, who will be appointed by the Government.

Member Secretary Police Station Commanding Officer, Ex-Circle Office Members, Block Development Officer, Senior Medical Officers, Excise, Social Welfare.

Members include the Chairman of the Corporation/Municipal Council (outside Guwahati) or Ward Commissioners (Guwahati), the highest public representative of the Development Authority, Nominated – Selection in consultation with the Minister of Defense.

The Commission will facilitate timely provision of citizen-centric services in the Police Department Ensure police response to complaints registered at Police Stations Monitor incidents of misbehavior, provide information and community responses to improve policing Use various public forums to push forward the concerns of the Police in actions related to matters of national security and public interest apart from creating public awareness about important social issues such as drug abuse, human trafficking, witch hunting, domestic violence, etc.

The Cabinet also approved a review of the salary structure of the Judicial Officers of the Subordinate Judiciary in accordance with the recommendations of the Second Judicial Pay Commission (SNJPC).
