Police in Gary, Indiana are investigating four fatal shootings in a 24-hour period.
In the first incident, an acquaintance brought a woman to the hospital Sunday with a gunshot wound, Gary Police Chief Brian Evans told reporters at a news conference Tuesday.
When officers arrived, the victim was already being treated, but she later succumbed to her injuries, Evans said.
A second shooting happened later that evening, Evans said. Officers responded to the 2600 block of Jackson Street, north of Indiana University’s Northwest Campus, where they encountered two gunshot victims, Evans said.
The female victim died from her injuries, and another victim, whose identity has not been released, is still alive and being treated at a Chicago hospital, Evans said.
The next fatal shooting happened later Sunday, Evans said. Officers responded to the 2900 block of West 11th Ave., where they found two fatally shot victims, both juveniles, Evans said.
Investigators believe both victims at the scene were killed at the same time, Evans said.
The four shootings were not gang- or drug-related, nor were they random or related, Evans said.
“We believe that every person is targeted by a person,” Evans said. “It happened in a very short amount of time.”
Police identified two of the victims as April King, 50, and Arlandus Jackson, 27. ABC News is not releasing the identities of the minor victims.
Gary Mayor Jermon Prince said at a news conference that there have been several other non-fatal shootings during the same period.
Prince noted the recent wave of violence that has hit the city.
“Within 24 hours, the city saw shootings across the area that left four people dead,” he said, adding that the city has implemented several anti-crime programs aimed at youth.
Additional information about the shooting was not immediately available.
