As a successful construction project manager, Julie Parker deals with legal issues in her work almost every day — from complying with building codes to reviewing contracts to following up on safety rules.
“In the construction, we did a lot of legal work,” he said.
Last year, Parker decided to take her legal education to the next level by pursuing the UC Hastings Certificate of Studies in Law (CSL), a 12-credit program that can be completed in one to three years. part-time number.
“I was looking to see if I wanted to work in law or not,” he said.
Launched in 2021, the CSL program provides students with an academic foundation in legal thinking and legal analysis. Professionals in fields including health, finance, engineering, and human resources are certified with a better understanding of the laws and legal institutions that affect their work.
“CSL is a wonderful way to gain insight into law, legal writing, and legal analysis, and to build professional relationships,” said Jessica Vapnek, who directs the CSL program at UC Hastings. “Courses required and chosen by CSL students provide a solid foundation for professionals in a variety of fields.”
The program begins with introductory courses on the American legal system, legal research, and legal writing. Then, after personal counseling sessions with a faculty advisor, students can focus on a particular area of law or follow a study course. Students can choose from options, including data analysis, environmental law, and labor law.
Completion of the CSL program places students halfway through the requirements for a Master of Laws (MSL) degree at UC Hastings, which can be completed in one full-time year or up to four time-space.
Parker said the CSL program allowed him to explore his interest in law without the time or financial resources required for a JD or master’s program, “It’s better from a financial standpoint .”
Parker, who completed the CSL program last spring, said she was interested in taking classes remotely or in-person because it made it easier to get into courses that related to his full-time work schedule.
Another graduate of the program, Va’Nechia Rayford, who was previously a pastor in the Alameda area and now serves as the head pastor of the Emory University Hospital System in Atlanta, said that it was very important, ” I highly recommend this program to anyone who wants to learn more about our legal system and how it deals with a wide range of punishments.”
Parker also said that through his negotiation class, he learned about strategies and tactics. He plans to share some of that knowledge when he talks about negotiations at a national conference of major contractors later this year. The program also allowed Parker to expand his professional network and connect with JD students enrolled in some of his classes.
After completing the program, Parker said she felt more confident working with attorneys and other legal professionals as part of her job. He said, “There are a lot of important lessons to be learned from the program.”
