Quebec College Holds Day of Healing After Shooting, Lockdown | Media Pyro

Students and staff were on lockdown for several hours Friday night after a shooting in a nearby park at Montmorency College in Laval, Que. A wellness day will be held in lieu of study.

The college said on its website that there will be no classes on Monday and instead a program to promote sobriety and healing.

Staff from the Center for Health and Human Services’ mental health division, along with experts in prevention and intervention, will be on hand to answer questions and provide resources for those impacted by Friday’s wide-ranging events.

“We didn’t want students to come back on Monday as if nothing had happened,” said Marie-Eve Dupuis Roussil, the college’s director of student affairs. “We wanted to create a space to talk about it.”

That night, four people were injured, including a man allegedly linked to street gang The Flamehead Boys, in a shooting at Green Space near the college.

None of the injuries were life-threatening.

Immediately after the shooting, students and staff were placed on lockdown until the evening.

Yanis Ouhib said he saw the victim inside the school.

“It looks like she’s holding a compress to stop the bleeding,” he said. “Then I started asking people, what’s going on? They told me she got shot, and I said, ‘Oh my God, no.'”

Following the events, the college established measures to support those affected by the shooting and its aftermath, and services continued this week.

Students or staff can see a counselor without an appointment at the school’s Learning Support Center.

It wasn’t bad, Ohib said, and he’s thankful that talking about it helps.

“We were met by people who asked how we were doing,” he said. “It was really good. I feel really good today.”

The school reminds students and staff of the following resources:

  • Info-Social: 811, option 2

  • Child Helpline (0-29 years): 1-800-668-6868

  • Suicide Prevention: 1-866-Apple
  • Students are invited to consult Col.NET for more information
