Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said the Rs 1,000 crore Assam Skill University will uplift the youth of the Northeast.

Presenting the ‘bhumi pujan’ at the institution at Darrang district headquarters in Mangaldai, about 70 km from Guwahati, Sarma said the institution would benefit from Assam’s disproportionately large population. small.

“The Rs 1,000-crore institution will have many schools and centers of excellence that will play a major role in uplifting the youth of the Northeast. The university will have various campuses in Assam,” he said.

Sarma said that it is planned to complete the construction of the entire center by August 2025 but a temporary center is expected to start working from 2024 itself.

The vocational university, which is the first of its kind in Assam and the third institution in the country, will provide education for skill development in various fields such as creativity, life skills and languages, design and creativity, through its various schools. . and courses.

It is partially funded by the Asian Development Bank. Incidentally, former minister Sarbananda Sonowal laid the foundation stone of the institution in February last year.

However, a university official claimed that stone-laying and conducting ‘bhumi pujan’ are not the same. He claimed that last year’s groundbreaking ceremony marked the approval of the project and site selection, while the actual construction work would begin after the ‘bumi pujan’.

“There are many steps after the project is cleared and the site is allocated such as contracts and search permits. These are done during the period between the foundation stone laying and the execution of the ‘bhumi pujan’,” he added.
