Shiladitya Dev makes derogatory remarks against ‘Islamic Muslims’ in Assam, CJP moves to NCM

Recently, Shiladitya Dev, a BJP leader and former Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Hojai constituency in Assam, in the stolen video, revealed provocative words, which angered the wider community in the name of ‘Miya Museum’. After the opening of the museum on October 23, Shiladitya Dev, an influential political figure with ties to the ruling party, the next day, October 24, engaged in hate speech in violation of the Indian Criminal Code.
He began with a diatribe, “Assam is full of Miya, so why is there a need for a Miya Museum, it should be lit and burnt”. This was an ugly incitement to targeted violence. He then continued, “After the CAA protest, a section of society wants the Srimanta Shankardev Kalakhetrya Museum, especially one MP.” This reference to one MP, written by Dev was meant to target Sherman Ali Ahmed. He also spoke about the origins of today’s Muslims, “90-99 out of 100 Muslims in Assam are of Hindu origin; and even today, some of them still have a Tulsi tree in their upper courtyards.” of Assam.” He also demanded the immediate destruction of the Miya Museum.
Dev further said, “Miya’s culture cannot be Assam’s culture, so the museum cannot be built here. The country is divided into Miya based on religion, so if they want to build such a museum, to build. Bangladesh or Pakistan. We will have no objection then.” Continuing his diatribe, he said “Lungi Topi (lower garment and skull cap) cannot be their identity, indigenous Muslims also do not wear Lungi and Topi.” He alleged that the Muslim people are trying to establish the Arabic culture in Assam!
This is not the first time that Shiladitya Dev has found himself in trouble for his words. In August 2020, multiple FIRs were filed against him by several groups and individuals who had given inspirational speeches. At that time, he was even widely condemned by the Assamese community when he dared to call the Assamese Liteteater who happened to be a Muslim, “intelligent jihad.”
The complaint filed by the CJP highlights Shiladitya Dev’s remarks as a serious threat to India’s peace, unity and solidarity. Especially, considering today’s sensitive climate of aggression against some sections of our people.
