Cordes Lakes, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) — A man facing charges for fatally shooting his neighbor and shooting at his wife, investigators say, told Yavapai County deputies he was “exorcising the devil.” The shooting happened at Cordes Lake just after 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
A 43-year-old neighbor called 911 and said 31-year-old Joshua Johnson had shot him. She said she went to Johnson’s house to tell him his dog was loose. That’s when Johnson shot her in the neck, investigators said. With the help of some other neighbors, she managed to escape and hide behind a truck. Deputies arrived and took her to the hospital.
After Johnson shot the woman, he went inside the home and shot his wife, YCSO said. Deputies say they tried to escape with the 18-month-old baby, but Johnson held them inside the home. SWAT teams then surrounded the house. A 911 dispatcher eventually got Johnson to leave the home and surrender to police. He was then taken into custody. Deputies have not said if Johnson’s wife was injured in the shooting.
Johnson admitted to shooting both women, and detectives said he was “exorcising the devil out of both victims.” He is charged with assault with a deadly weapon, attempted murder, two counts of kidnapping and two counts of disorderly conduct.
