Chicago (CBS) – A customer with a concealed carry license shot and killed a man who attempted to rob a South Shore grocery store Friday night.

A beloved store clerk also died from injuries sustained in the shooting.

The shooting happened at the El Baraka supermarket on 73rd Street at South Shore Drive, on the ground floor of the 7300 Venture apartment building.

According to Chicago police, a man attempted to rob the supermarket at gunpoint shortly before closing time around 6:20 p.m.

Police said the robber pointed a gun at the 64-year-old clerk, believed to be the owner of the store.

The robber was met by a customer who had a firearms owners identification card and a concealed carry license, police said.

It is unclear who fired the first shot. Witnesses said they heard two shots, a pause, then two more shots — four shots in total.

When he finished all the shots, the robber was shot in the chest and ran out of the store, police said. Then he fell to the ground and died.

Meanwhile, the clerk, identified by the medical examiner’s office as Ali Hasan, was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the chest and back, where he was later pronounced dead.

Members of the South Shore community said they were saddened to learn that the clerk, who helped so many in the community, had been injured.

“This was somebody who gives respect to the community; does business in the community. They give turkeys. They do all kinds of things in the community,” said Stephanie Gadlin, who heard the gunshots. “It’s just a big loss for us, so it’s shocking.”

It’s unclear if the customer who shot the robber was injured in the exchange.

Police said three country-made firearms were recovered.

Even after 10 o’clock at night, the police reached the spot and conducted an investigation.

Detectives are investigating.
