Nov 14 (Reuters) – Squire Patton Boggs said on Monday it would open an office in Dublin next year, becoming the latest international law firm to expand into Ireland.
The office will open on May 1 and will be led by Dennis Agnew, head of Pinsent Masons’ Dublin-based marketing team. Agnew is a founding partner of the Dublin office of Pinsent Masons.
A Squire Patton Boggs spokesman said the firm was currently looking at a site in Dublin’s business district.
Agnew will lead its recruiting efforts in Dublin, the firm said.
“In the post-Brexit world, Ireland continues to emerge as a major center of business activity in many of our key areas of international business, including private equity, technology and life sciences,” global managing partner Steve Mahon said in a statement.
Agnew said in an email that the exact timing of his departure from Pinsent Masons “remains to be agreed upon.”
John Cleland, managing partner of Pinsent Masons, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Ireland’s low corporate tax rate has helped attract big tech and drug companies to its shores. Major technology companies, including Meta Platforms Inc, Microsoft Corp’s LinkedIn, and Workday Inc have expanded their bases in Dublin in recent years.
Multinational companies employ one in nine workers in Ireland; Last year, the Irish government announced that the number of people working in multinational companies would reach 275,000 by 2021, a 10% increase on its pre-pandemic level.
International law firms have followed suit. Earlier this year, Armstrong Teasdale, a 370-lawyer firm based in the Midwest, announced it was opening a Dublin office. Two London firms, Bird & Bird and Addleshaw Goddard, have also broken into the Irish market this year.
Detroit-based Clark Hill, which opened a Dublin office in 2018, made two connections to local small businesses in January. Hogan Lovells and the UK arm of Littler Mendelson opened offices there in 2021, while Dentons launched in Dublin in 2020.
Squire Patton Boggs was formed in 2014 by the merger of Washington, DC-founded Patton Boggs and Cleveland-founded Squire Sanders. The firm boasts more than 1,500 lawyers in more than 40 offices worldwide. It is also among the largest manufacturing companies in Washington.
