A 79-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman was killed in the latest fatal shooting in Merseyside.
Police found the body of the woman, who appeared to be in her 50s, after being called to an address in Wirral, Moreton, at around 1.45am on Sunday.
She was pronounced dead at the scene in Meadowbrook Road, with a wound to her chest similar to a gunshot wound, Merseyside Police said in a statement.
Officers arrested a 79-year-old man known to the victim on suspicion of murder. He has been taken into custody for questioning.
On Sunday morning, the police cordon continued on Meadowbrook Road as officers carried out forensic tests, CCTV checks and house-to-house enquiries.
CI Derek Riley said: “Although one person has been arrested following the tragic death of this woman in Moreton, we are still in the early stages of our investigation and inquiries into the incident are still ongoing in the area.”
He appealed for witnesses to contact the police. “I would urge anyone who was in the vicinity of Meadowbrook Road in the early hours of this morning, who saw or heard anything, or who thinks they may have caught something significant on their doorbell camera or dashcam, to contact us urgently.
“I would encourage anyone with any other information that they believe could assist our investigation to get in touch as it is vital to our enquiries.”
The incident is the latest in a recent spate of deadly shootings in the area. In one week in August, three people, including nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel, were shot and killed in separate incidents.
Before those deaths, there had been no fatal shootings in Merseyside in the past 13 months.
