MILLCREEK, Utah – A teenager was arrested in the early morning shooting at a Millcreek gas station that killed an 18-year-old and another who was originally in critical condition.
Unified Police said 18-year-old Hussain Moose was arrested and jailed for murder.
The shooting happened shortly before 12:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven located at 4051 South State Street, police said.
“Those guys got out of their car and these young guys went inside the 7-Eleven for a few minutes and then went back into the parking lot,” explained Sgt. Melody Cutter with the Unified Police Department. “That’s when our 7-Eleven clerk heard the gunshots.”
When officers arrived, they found a 19-year-old male in the parking lot with a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital in “very critical condition,” but was later cleared of that status and the victim is expected to survive, police say.
An 18-year-old male was picked up at the scene, loaded into a white Lexus and taken to a hospital, where he died, Sgt. Cutler said.
The police identified the 18-year-old as Talib Ahmed.
Officials are still piecing together the pieces of what led up to the shooting.
“All we know at this time is that there were two groups of males here at the 7-Eleven,” Sgt. Cutler said. “There was some type of dispute in the parking lot and multiple shots were fired.”
Investigators believe there were at least four vehicles involved in the shooting, including suspects, witnesses and victims, and as many as 10 people may have been involved.
There are also unanswered questions about the weapons involved.
“It’s not sure if they were shooting at each other or if there was a group that had two weapons,” Cutler said, “and we’re not clear on that at this point.”
Cutler explained that one of the challenges in the investigation was the lack of witnesses given the time of night.
Police teams spent several hours at businesses across the street from the 7-Eleven, and the area was closed off as part of the investigation.
“The reality is … these kids are getting access to these guns that they shouldn’t have, you know, not understanding the consequences of their actions,” Cutler said. “A life has been lost, realistically, more than one, because as soon as people are caught they face some serious charges.
