DarangiriA two-month-old baby wild elephant died on Thursday after getting stuck in mud in a grass field in Sesapani Bainpara village in Goalpara district of Assam.
According to local residents, around seventy wild elephants wandered into the sand park in search of food.
They suspected that when the herd of elephants got lost in the sandy field, one of the young elephants got stuck in the mud.
On Thursday morning, the baby elephant was rescued by local residents. Later, they informed the forest department but the elephant died hours later.
A forest official said, “The young elephant died of weakness. We have called the veterinarian to do an examination and after the report, we will know the real cause of death.
“The elephant is about two months old and entered the paddy field with the group,” he added.
However, local residents claim that the forest department has not taken any action to stop wild elephants from encroaching on non-forest areas, resulting in the destruction of hectares of sandy land by the group.
