Louisville, Ky. (WAVE) – A brawl at a popular Highlands bar spills out onto the street and one man is shot and injured.
The owner of Vic’s Pizza woke up Sunday morning to find bullets hitting the front windows.
LMPD tells WAVE News the incident started with two groups of people fighting inside 942 Baxter around 2:30 a.m.
They were asked to leave and the fight continued outside the building.
The police said that both groups opened fire and one person was beaten up. He is expected to survive the injury.
People in Highland and the surrounding area say they love where they live. A major reason for this, they say, is that they feel safe.
But after a man was shot on Baxter Avenue early Sunday morning, they now say they might think twice.
Bullets hit the windows of Vic’s Pizza a few hours later, evidence of a violent night in the Highlands.
Events like this were common in 2021, but 2022 has changed for the better, says Councilwoman Cassie Chambers Armstrong.
“What we’ve seen is a dramatic drop in violent crime from last year to this year,” Chambers Armstrong said. “So we’ve seen an eighty-five percent drop in violent crime and shootings in that part of Highland.”
According to LMPD statistics, there were 13 violent crimes in the Highlands last year, but Sunday morning’s incident was the second of the year.
Chambers credits Armstrong with the lack of a concerted effort to create change.
“Everyone from the Office of Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods is looking at different upstream approaches to our partners with ABC, LMPD, neighborhood associations and area business owners,” explained Chambers Armstrong.
People in the Highlands told WAVE News that the area has felt a change over the past few years.
“I don’t walk after dark like I used to, or even Cherokee Park,” said Jen, who lives in Highland.
While she says it’s frustrating to see crime so close to her home, Jen says she still loves where she lives.
“Crime has really changed the atmosphere, which is sad,” Jen shared. “You know, but it’s still a wonderful, wonderful neighborhood, and I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.”
Meanwhile, Chambers-Armstrong says he’s proud of their progress and is working to ensure violent crime goes down.
“It’s really helpful to start this conversation in the late-night community, to start holding each other accountable and to the greater community to make sure we’re being a good steward of the community,” Chambers Armstrong said. “
Councilwoman Chambers Armstrong says she is currently working to get a set of best practices through the executive branch and hopes to create policies to reduce gun use at the state level.
